It's All In The Details

Burger Basics

Roxy Burger starts off with a fresh Angus steak patty (you can also have buffalo, turkey, salmon, lamb, tuna, chicken or veggie) splayed out on your choice of a Kaiser or whole wheat roll. The patty is light on seasoning and relies on the fact that you, as a burger lover, enjoy the flavors and simple nuances that an all-beef patty provides. To call the patty juicy may be an insult to the burger juice fairy, as this patty oozes burger goodness from first bite to last. The bun is fresh and airy, providing great juice absorption and ample squeeze to ensure that your grip doesn’t falter during consumption.

The Extras

The toppings on my burger were both fresh and ample. Thick portions of your slice-ables (tomato, cheese and onion) and a healthy slathering of your sauces (ketchup, mayo, mustard) provide you with that backyard barbecue feel to your burger where you load the beast up just because you can. The difference I found here was that there was no one overwhelming ingredient that you can sometimes find with an abundance of toppings, the flavors all played off each other in sweet burger harmony. Add in the fresh bacon and you’re all-out topping bonanza is complete.

The Experience

Roxy burger is a Vancouver staple, and why wouldn’t it be? It’s located right on, what some may call, the main thoroughfare of Vancouver. During the day you can sit down and catch a game on their TV’s while scarfing down a top-notch burg, or you can stop by later on after a night at the Roxy and use a Roxy Burg as hangover prevention.

My Take

There is a reason that Roxy Burger comes up in conversation whenever the age old debate of “Best Burger” comes up and I feel ashamed that I am, in my estimation, well into this endeavor and still had not tackled this burger. Roxy Burger deals you a no frills burger that you may feel you could find at a patio fiesta of your own, if you knew how to create perfect burger harmony, that is. Don’t fool yourself here, while it is seemingly classic and simple in its flavor, the Roxy Burger is a great form of Burger Art melding just the right amount all of the classic burger flavors together in one beautiful creation. Now, this isn’t to say that there aren’t more adventurous offerings on their menu either because Roxy Burger will wow your senses not only with their classic burger flavor, but with their selection as well. With 17 different pre-determined burger creations and an ability to let your imagination run wild and create your own masterpiece, the burger section of their menu reads like a Star Wars intro scene. Simply Put, Roxy Burger RoxYour World.

Burger Rating Scale: Explained

To start, just a note explaining the weighted rating of the burg. We understand that it might be a little confusing, but the thought is that certain points of a burger just have more of an effect on how good a burger really is. For example, we feel the quality of the patty has a bigger impact on the burger than the cost or how well it holds together.

  • Quality of Bun: How was the bun? Fresh? Chewy? We always hope for the freshest possible bun, something that we can grip on to and that will act as a proper container for the burger itself
  • Quality of Patty: Ah, the essence of the burg. How good is the patty though? I mean, are we dealing with the ideal 80/20 chuck? Or, do we have a patty riddled with filler and other foreign and unwanted product?
  • Quality of Toppings: How fresh is the produce on the burg? How fresh are the sauces? How well prepared are the other wild and wonderful things that adorn our burg?
  • Selection of Toppings: Is this a joint that tells you what to get? Or is the the sky the limit? There's something to be said for a place that will let you pile some onion rings, a fried egg and a half a Bavarian on your burg.
  • Preparation: How well are the 'essentials' prepared? Did you have the makings for a good patty, but Joe Chef burnt it beyond recognition? Was the patty great, but that heap of bacon you wanted was uncooked? Overall, how was the burger put together?
  • Aesthetics: Nothing says delicious like a burger that is giving you those "come hither" looks with how delicious IT looks.
  • Manageability: How far did you make it before the burger fell apart? I know a good burger is supposed to be juicy and leave your hands a mess, but I don't feel that I should be eating the majority of it with a fork.
  • Drip Factor: Just how far down your arm did that succulent stream of burger juices make it? We all know that noone leaves a proper burger battle without getting a little messy
  • Uniqueness: Can you get this burg at McDonalds? Did they take some time to actually make something different here? You can have burgers that are just plain amazing, and you can have burgers that are amazing and make you think "Where did they come up with this?"
  • Overall Flavor: Did your taste-buds do a jig? Does your mouth water at the mere mention of this burger joint? Flavor is where it’s at baby!
  • Value: How much "bang for your buck" factor was involved? Obviously you pay for greatness, but sometimes it is unjust, and sometimes it is just a treat.
