It's All In The Details

Burger Basics

Perhaps my palette is just not refined enough for a sophisticated burg, or perhaps I just got a bad bun, but my rating of this burger almost starts and ends with the bun. In my mind, a pretzel bun is a good idea. I mean, you've got a nice dense bun that is sturdy enough to handle some heavy duty burging, you've got some saltiness for extra flavor, and it looks good. Unfortunately, my expectations were not met and the burger suffered as a result. The bun was too dense and almost tasted stale, my fingers piercing through to patty while I was trying to eat. Perhaps I shouldn't complain, I did have 5 other options in the bun department. Inside the bun though, was a very proportionately sized quality piece of meat cooked and seasoned very well. Beef not your thing? Try another of the umpteen options to throw on the bun.

The Extras

The list of toppings was almost overwhelming. No, scratch that, it IS overwhelming. Over 60 burger options to choose from if you are so daring as to try and build a burg yourself. I mean, there's a stinkin' PB&J burger on the menu! It's burgsanity! I'm going to have to ask that you visit their website to actually see all of the options. This meager site wasn't designed for the sheer number of toppings they make available. 20 Sauces?!? Are you kidding? All of the toppings that were brought on our burgers were top shelf. Fresh and plentiful produce, abundant and thick bacon and some fine quality cheese. Not much else you can ask for in the toppings department. One side note in the "extras" department would be to get the dude milkshake. It's a White Russian milkshake that really ties the meal together.

The Experience

Set up in Banff, exterior scenery and nature is not in short supply around Eddie burger. The restaurant itself is kind of tiny, but that should be expected as you're dealing with a tourist type town where you need to cram a lot of things into a little space.

My Take

I find myself almost in a sense of sorrow as I write this rating, it is one thing to drive 20 minutes and get just a bad burg, for no other reason than circumstance. It is a very different thing to drive clear across a province and get burgy eyed over the litany of options put before you, only to leave disappointed. Perhaps the disappointment is because the pieces are all there for something unique and outrageous. I don't feel that my expectations were unwarranted either, you put 60 top quality burger options in front of me on a laminated checklist and I am going to get excited. No question about it. I had a bite of the PB&J burger, and it was out of sight. My partner in crime couldn't stop raving about how good her PB&J burger was. Unfortunately, I had to rate mine and my burger was found to be lacking in one monumental area. If you're headed up to Banff definitely check it out because, while my burg wasn't the greatest, it is obvious that my experience was probably a one-off. The rest of the equation was too good for my burger to be the norm.

Burger Rating Scale: Explained

To start, just a note explaining the weighted rating of the burg. We understand that it might be a little confusing, but the thought is that certain points of a burger just have more of an effect on how good a burger really is. For example, we feel the quality of the patty has a bigger impact on the burger than the cost or how well it holds together.

  • Quality of Bun: How was the bun? Fresh? Chewy? We always hope for the freshest possible bun, something that we can grip on to and that will act as a proper container for the burger itself
  • Quality of Patty: Ah, the essence of the burg. How good is the patty though? I mean, are we dealing with the ideal 80/20 chuck? Or, do we have a patty riddled with filler and other foreign and unwanted product?
  • Quality of Toppings: How fresh is the produce on the burg? How fresh are the sauces? How well prepared are the other wild and wonderful things that adorn our burg?
  • Selection of Toppings: Is this a joint that tells you what to get? Or is the the sky the limit? There's something to be said for a place that will let you pile some onion rings, a fried egg and a half a Bavarian on your burg.
  • Preparation: How well are the 'essentials' prepared? Did you have the makings for a good patty, but Joe Chef burnt it beyond recognition? Was the patty great, but that heap of bacon you wanted was uncooked? Overall, how was the burger put together?
  • Aesthetics: Nothing says delicious like a burger that is giving you those "come hither" looks with how delicious IT looks.
  • Manageability: How far did you make it before the burger fell apart? I know a good burger is supposed to be juicy and leave your hands a mess, but I don't feel that I should be eating the majority of it with a fork.
  • Drip Factor: Just how far down your arm did that succulent stream of burger juices make it? We all know that noone leaves a proper burger battle without getting a little messy
  • Uniqueness: Can you get this burg at McDonalds? Did they take some time to actually make something different here? You can have burgers that are just plain amazing, and you can have burgers that are amazing and make you think "Where did they come up with this?"
  • Overall Flavor: Did your taste-buds do a jig? Does your mouth water at the mere mention of this burger joint? Flavor is where it’s at baby!
  • Value: How much "bang for your buck" factor was involved? Obviously you pay for greatness, but sometimes it is unjust, and sometimes it is just a treat.
