It's All In The Details

Burger Basics

The building blocks of this burger were exactly what you would look for when building an old fashioned greasy burg. The patty is good, fresh beef without any really noticeable seasoning, allowing for the raw patty flavour to stand out while eating the burg. It's also cooked well, leaving all the necessary burger juices locked inside. The cook even made a comment to another patron about making sure the patty was juicy, so you know they care about serving up a good patty. The bun is very fresh, and a perfect balance of chewy and toasted, with the edges providing a great bit of a crunch to add a nice texture to the burger.

The Extras

Every one of the toppings were all fresh, great quality, and of perfect proportion. Just enough of each sauce to make a mess of my face and hands, but not so much that it drowned out the flavor of the burger. The fries were that perfect balance of greasy, salty and crunchy, and perfect to eat without the usual ketchup slathering. I honestly think I could eat an entire bag full of those fries. Finally the cheese... Processed, was the perfect compliment to all of the flavors on the burger. Not completely melted so that it was runny and mixed in with the other sauces, and just the right proportion to not overwhelm you with that processed cheese flavor.

The Experience

The experience of Texx Big Burger is part of the fun, the owner greets you and helps you out with how things work, all the while trying to sell you on taking part in the challenge they call the "Super Texx". After seeing a couple of pictures, I was quite intrigued, but not quite ready at that time. The place works like a burger bar, in that you pick the base to your burger and then load it up, a-la-carte, with whatever other toppings you want. Can’t say enough about the whole concept of this place, well done.

My Take

Texx Big Burger is somewhat tucked away in so much as, it is not quite the neighborhood you would normally venture out to in search of a burg. However, this weekend provided a sunny day that was the perfect reason to make the trek. As I read the board, the prices were the first thing to catch my eye. A bacon cheese burger with any toppings I want for under $10? I've heard that story before, and it didn't end well. With cautious optimism, checked the boxes on what toppings I wanted for my bacon cheeseburger, placed the order and waited patiently. As the gentlemen next to be got his bag-o-burg, with a transparent spotted design from the fry grease, all worries melted away. It was obvious that there was care and attention paid to the art of the burger here. When I got my burger I peered into the paper bag with excitement and a bit of urgency, I needed to eat this burger now. As I unwrapped it, it looked like the epitome of a greasy diner burg with sauce, toppings, cheese and bacon poking out from all angles and the first bite confirmed all of my hopes, this was a choice burg. Still, the one thing that sticks out in my head is how well the flavours all melded together, including the processed cheese. I am not, and probably never will be, a fan of the use of processed cheese but this is the exact kind of burger it should be used on, and I am a fan of this burger. Next time though, the Super Texx is in my sights.

Burger Rating Scale: Explained

To start, just a note explaining the weighted rating of the burg. We understand that it might be a little confusing, but the thought is that certain points of a burger just have more of an effect on how good a burger really is. For example, we feel the quality of the patty has a bigger impact on the burger than the cost or how well it holds together.

  • Quality of Bun: How was the bun? Fresh? Chewy? We always hope for the freshest possible bun, something that we can grip on to and that will act as a proper container for the burger itself
  • Quality of Patty: Ah, the essence of the burg. How good is the patty though? I mean, are we dealing with the ideal 80/20 chuck? Or, do we have a patty riddled with filler and other foreign and unwanted product?
  • Quality of Toppings: How fresh is the produce on the burg? How fresh are the sauces? How well prepared are the other wild and wonderful things that adorn our burg?
  • Selection of Toppings: Is this a joint that tells you what to get? Or is the the sky the limit? There's something to be said for a place that will let you pile some onion rings, a fried egg and a half a Bavarian on your burg.
  • Preparation: How well are the 'essentials' prepared? Did you have the makings for a good patty, but Joe Chef burnt it beyond recognition? Was the patty great, but that heap of bacon you wanted was uncooked? Overall, how was the burger put together?
  • Aesthetics: Nothing says delicious like a burger that is giving you those "come hither" looks with how delicious IT looks.
  • Manageability: How far did you make it before the burger fell apart? I know a good burger is supposed to be juicy and leave your hands a mess, but I don't feel that I should be eating the majority of it with a fork.
  • Drip Factor: Just how far down your arm did that succulent stream of burger juices make it? We all know that noone leaves a proper burger battle without getting a little messy
  • Uniqueness: Can you get this burg at McDonalds? Did they take some time to actually make something different here? You can have burgers that are just plain amazing, and you can have burgers that are amazing and make you think "Where did they come up with this?"
  • Overall Flavor: Did your taste-buds do a jig? Does your mouth water at the mere mention of this burger joint? Flavor is where it’s at baby!
  • Value: How much "bang for your buck" factor was involved? Obviously you pay for greatness, but sometimes it is unjust, and sometimes it is just a treat.
